The right system for a power hungry Victorian gatehouse
A year with OffGrid Pro and ‘the figures say it all’…
Installing an OffGrid Pro battery bank to power everything in a Victorian gatehouse offered considerable benefits for property owner, Jon.
It also answered questions about its suitability, and ability, to provide the power needed for the property, especially given the high energy demands of the property – so not only would the system need to power everything it’ll save a significant amount of money while doing it.

The requirement
Running a pool, hot tub, electric Aga, electric water heaters as well as all the usual appliances such as electric ovens, kettles, and an electric vehicle amounted to a pre-install electric bill running to about £600 per month, plus oil for heating (which has since been switched to electric water heating and radiators).
Offgrid Pro was set up to combat rising prices due to rate increases, and in response to forecasts of rolling blackouts that painted an uncertain future regarding the reliability of the grid.
The installation, and beyond…
Installation was completed by OffGrid Pro’s skilled installers in just one day. In the year since installing the system, we asked how has it performed. Well in short, it has saved £6,165.45 over the year.
How the costs worked out
Referenced in the screen capture, ‘To Grid’ is power exported to the grid, ‘From Grid’ is power bought in. ‘Solar’ is power generated by solar and ‘Consumption’ is how much has been used.
The figures given in the examples below exclude solar calculations due to the differences between system performances due to many factors, including location and array angle.
Therefore, focusing on the battery bank, we will assume electric is 35p per kWh as a base rate, and nighttime rate is 7.5p per kWh.
Pre-install…
Jon used 20,587 kWh over a year.
Without the battery grid installed (and excluding solar generation) this would have been 20,587 x 0.35p
= £7,205.45 per year

With a battery system, given the same annual usage:
The battery grid is charged using cheap nighttime rate of 7.5p per kWh, our actual spend (excluding solar) was 20,587 (usage) x 0.75p
= £1,544 per year

Investment Summary
Before installation, Jon was paying £7,205.45 for electricity.
Post installation, Jon is now paying £1,544 for his electricity.
If we add in the solar generated, this reduces ‘From the Grid’ usage to 13,997 kWh, so the actual spend was: 13,997 (usage) x £0.075p (cost) = £1,049.
Annual saving £6,165.45
Projected savings over 25 years circa £150,000 (without solar)
The cost of the system is fully recovered within five years.
