‘Three weeks of power consumption cut to half a day

Ian cut his energy usage in half with anOffGrid Pro hybrid system

OffGrid Pro installed a 16kW microgrid system to a property in Portsmouth, utilising an existing 8kW solar array previously installed at the property.

Before the OffGrid Pro installation, the solar panel system only used 25% of its capacity, as 75% was being exported back to the grid. Sadly, this is not uncommon for many solar systems that operate independently without storing generated electricity.

Average monthly costs reduced from £900 to £53

When we first spoke to our client, his average monthly electricity bills ranged from £600 – £900, subject to usage and solar production.Since installation Ian’s summer electricity bills averaged £53 per month, and estimated winter bills of around £1,167 per month.

A brief overview of how the system works

OffGrid Pro’s 16kW microgrid system utilises all the existing 8kW solar-generated power to charge a designated battery bank during the day. This stored electricity can then be used when required at any time.

At night, when electricity tariffs are at their lowest, power is drawn from the grid to top up the battery bank resulting in a continuous cycle of top-up and usage. Obviously, power drawn from the solar is free, and power drawn from the grid is at its lowest rate making the whole system unbelievably efficient.

This 16kW microgrid system also delivers enough power to run all the house peak loads when required with no problem.

How the costs worked out

The system cost £39,000 to install and took just 24 hours to complete.

Based on average monthly usage, in the Summer, solar production is expected to be 1,000kWh, and Ian’s average household consumption is expected to be 1,500kWh, including electric car charging.

Projected electricity costs will look something like this:

During the Summer…

1,000 kWh drawn from the solar array – FREE.

500 kWh drawn from the grid on nighttime tariffs (at £0.075p per kWh) and a monthly standing charge of £15.50 (50p per day)

= £53 per month

During the Winter…

150kWh drawn from the solar array – FREE

1,350kWh drawn from the grid on nighttime tariffs (at £0.075p per kWh) and a monthly standing charge of £15.50 (50p per day)

= £116.75 per month

Investment Summary

Before installation, Ian paid around £9,000 annually (average £750 pm) for electricity.

Post installation, Ian is now paying around £1,020 per year (£53 pm summer – £117 pm winter) for his electricity.

Annual saving £7,980
